educational programs listed below.

The
GTSO's Philosophy of Arts Education
The
GTSO believes that:
- the creation, performance and
appreciation of the arts are basic
human behaviors: therefore, arts education is
essential;
- arts education is based upon an
integral, sequential, curricular
presentation of knowledge and skills to be acquired
and applied
by the learner;
- response to the the arts, learning
style and rate of learning are unique
to each individual learner;
- developing arts literacy through
mastery of skills is a life-long process;
- many institutions and
organizations share the responsibility for arts
education of the community and that through
collaboration we
efficiently broaden relevant experiences for children
and adults.
The GTSO has served as a community
resource in the arts throughout
the Delaware Valley. It has provided:
- information regarding the arts and
their importance to the public;
- educational programming for school
children in the only formal
concert hall in the area;
- preparatory and follow-up
educational materials for children's
concerts;
- training for teachers;
- recognition for students'
accomplishments;
- free and low-cost concert tickets
for school families and staff.

Mercer
County Honors Choir
The
Mercer County Honors Choir was formed in the Fall of 2003
under the joint sponsorship of the New Jersey Education
Association and the Greater Trenton Symphony
Orchestra.
Membership in the Mercer County Honors Choir is open to high school students,
teachers and other education professionals in Mercer County, and is by recommendation. Students interested in joining should speak to their choral music teachers about registration. There are no auditions, but participants should have at least two years of choral singing experience and at least a moderate degree of sight-singing or music reading skills. There are no membership fees or costs. Sets of music
are provided to all participants.
Performances
The
Mercer County Honors Choir performed in concert with
the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra at Patriots Theater
at the Trenton War Memorial in a special concert for the
150th Anniversary of the New Jersey Education Association
at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2003. A second
performance for the general public, entitled "An
American Celebration," took place on Sunday,
November 23, 2003 at 3:00 p.m., also at Patriots Theater.

Program:
The program for this performance will be the same as the first performance,
plus 3 choruses from Meredith Willson's
The Music Man.
Each chorus member will receive a pair of complimentary tickets to the public performance on Sunday, November 23.
Rehearsals
There will be 5 Preliminary Rehearsals with piano accompaniment and 3 Final Rehearsals with orchestral accompaniment by the Greater Trenton Symphony Orchestra. Participants are asked to attend a minimum of 3 of the 5 Preliminary Rehearsals and all 3 of the Final Rehearsals.

All Preliminary Rehearsals will be held at the NJEA office building, 180 West State Street in Trenton, across from the State Legislature Building. Free, secure parking is provided.
Final Rehearsals With Orchestra:
Monday, Nov. 17, 2003 - 7:15 - 9:15 p.m.
Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003 - 7:15 - 9:15 p.m.
Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003 - 1:00 - 2:45 p.m.
A lunch will be provided between the rehearsal and the performance at the NJEA office on Saturday, November 22 and transportation from the War Memorial to the lunch will be provided.

Students are asked to register their intention to join the Mercer County Honors Choir through their choral teachers. Registration can be made via mail or fax, using

Educational
Concerts for School Audiences
On February 4, 2004, the GTSO will present a fully staged production of
Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf" at the Trenton
War Memorial's Patriots Theater in a pair of daytime
performances for school audiences. These concerts are
designed for school groups consisting of students in
grades K through 5.
In addition to tickets to the
performance, participants in these educational programs
will receive a packet of pre-and post-concert educational
materials for classroom use. These materials have been
developed by a group of professional educators, and are
compliant with the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards.
